Round Hill Hotel & Villas

There are resorts you visit and resorts you feel. Round Hill is firmly in the second category. I knew going into this trip that it had a reputation as something special, the kind of place that attracts a fiercely loyal following of guests who come back year after year without needing much convincing. What I did not fully appreciate until I pulled through the security gate was just how immediately it works on you. Something about driving onto those grounds just takes you somewhere else entirely. The stress of the journey disappears within about thirty seconds.

This was also my first vacation traveling alone with my two young boys since losing my husband, and I want to be honest about that context because it shaped the way I experienced the entire trip. I was nervous going into it, but it ended up being exactly what we needed. By the end of the vacation, we were all discussing when we could come back.

THE PROPERTY

Round Hill spans 110 acres of lush tropical gardens that lead to a beautifully secluded private beach. One of my favorite things about the resort is its timeless design. From the open-air lobby and elegant furnishings to the Ralph Lauren-designed rooms and bar, every detail feels effortlessly sophisticated without ever feeling overdone.

Walking through the property for the first time feels like stepping back into a more gracious era of travel. With its understated elegance, rich history, and Old Hollywood charm, it's easy to see why so many celebrities, presidents, and royalty have chosen Round Hill as their Caribbean retreat over the decades.

This is not a resort trying to impress you with scale or spectacle. It impresses you with everything being exactly right. The grounds are impeccable. The rooms are beautiful with traditional Caribbean decor that feels genuinely elegant rather than generic. And the whole atmosphere carries this quality of quiet confidence, the place knows what it is and does not need to prove it to anyone.

Rooms vs Villas

Accommodations at Round Hill come in two forms and the right choice depends entirely on the size and style of your group. The hotel rooms are beautifully appointed and perfect for couples or smaller families. They are also a short walk to the beach and the restaurant. For guests with three people, they set up an additional bed that fit in the room perfectly. For four guests or more, the two-bedroom villas are an absolutely ideal setup. They are spacious, private, and set up in a way that makes a family feel genuinely at home rather than crammed into a hotel configuration.

The villas are the real showpiece of the property. They range from two to six bedrooms, each with its own layout and distinct décor, no two are exactly alike, and almost all have private pools. Each villa comes with dedicated staff who prepare breakfast for you every morning and handles daily housekeeping. The level of personal service here is extraordinary. One thing worth knowing: the villas do not have televisions, which sounds like it might be a concern and honestly turns out to be one of the best parts of the stay. We occasionally used tablets in the evenings for a short time, but mostly we just did not think about it.

The villas sit up on the hillside with a five to ten minute walk down to the beach and pool areas, or you can call a golf cart shuttle anytime. If you are visiting with a group of friends, renting a villa together and hiring a babysitter in the evenings so the adults can go down to dinner alone is genuinely the ideal Round Hill experience. The combination of proper family time during the day and real adult time at night is the perfect combination.

THE BEACH AND POOLS

The beach at Round Hill is calm, protected, and completely safe for young children, no real wave action, clear water, and a genuinely beautiful stretch of private sand. There are sand toys available for kids, a water trampoline and floating mat out in the water, and the kind of relaxed supervision that means you can actually sit in a chair and breathe for a few minutes. My younger son spent nearly every day with goggles and a snorkel just swimming around looking for fish on his own, which tells you everything about how safe and manageable the water is for young kids.

The infinity pool is stunning, and is a great change of pace from the beach at times. There is also a small dedicated pool for younger children. For adults wanting something a little more removed or those traveling without kids, there are chairs set on the rocks in a very European beach club style — quiet, peaceful, and away from the family energy.

Water sports are available across the board: kayaks, paddleboards, and motorized options. We attempted water skiing for the first time, but Austin had a hard time getting up. I was proud of him for trying something new and the staff were patient and encouraging about the whole thing. Every morning at 9:30am there is a complimentary 30-minute glass bottom boat tour around the coral reef, which is a lovely way to start the day.

FOR FAMILIES

The kids club at Round Hill is fantastic. While it's geared a bit more toward younger children, it still has plenty to keep older kids entertained. It is complimentary, requires no reservation, and you can drop the kids off whenever it works best for your family. That flexibility alone makes a real difference with young children whose energy levels and moods don't always follow a schedule.

On our first afternoon, I dropped the boys off at the kids club while I enjoyed a proper lunch alone for the first time in what felt like months, then took a full tour of the villas. Throughout our stay, the staff took the boys around the property, fed the fish, played foosball and pool, and painted rocks. One staff member even spent two to three hours helping Austin try to catch fish with a net, something he still talks about today.

You can also arrange for babysitters for younger children, who can spend time with them in the kids club or anywhere else on the property. If you're hoping to enjoy a relaxed dinner or an evening out, this is a wonderful option. It works especially well if you're staying in one of the villas.

THE SPA

The spa at Round Hill is tucked away in an adults-only section of the property and is genuinely one of the best massage experiences I have had in a while. It is not a large sprawling facility, it is intimate and serene and the quality of the treatments is exceptional. If you are visiting Round Hill as a couple or taking any time away from the kids, this is a non-negotiable afternoon.

One of the more recent and genuinely exciting additions to the property is the Moët & Chandon adults-only beach, a sophisticated private beach area tucked near the spa that you can relax and enjoy a glass of chilled champagne.

Round Hill also has premier tennis and pickleball facilities with regular clinics hosted by visiting professionals, which is a detail worth knowing for those who like to stay active between the beach and the pool.

DINING

Round Hill has one restaurant, and I want to address that directly because it sounds like a limitation and it genuinely is not. The dinner menu changes nightly, the food is excellent, and the setting is spectacular. Sitting outside on the terrace with live music every evening is one of those dining experiences that makes the meal feel like an event rather than just another dinner.

The Jamaican Night was a standout. Sitting outside in the warm evening air with traditional Jamaican food, live music, and fire performers was one of those unexpected moments that ends up being the thing you talk about long after you are home. The farm-to-table culinary program draws on the resort's own organic gardens and features Michelin star chef residencies throughout the year, which makes the dining experience genuinely destination-worthy on its own terms.

Villa guests have their own staff preparing breakfast every morning, which means that meal is already covered in the most lovely possible way before the day even starts. Which again, shows you can relax and enjoy vacation for a change.

Another thoughtful touch is the complimentary afternoon tea served daily at 4:00 p.m. on the terrace. After a morning at the beach or by the pool, it's the perfect place to stop for a light snack, tea, or coffee while taking in the beautiful views. We happened to get caught in a rainstorm one afternoon, and the terrace became a cozy place to relax and wait for the rain to pass.

Bars

The beach bar is one of my favorite spots on the property. Set right on the sand, it's the perfect place to enjoy a drink while still having a full view of the beach and keeping an eye on the kids. It does get busy around lunchtime, and I could see it being difficult to find a seat during peak season. That said, beach service is available, so you can easily order food and drinks without ever leaving your lounge chair. Also, the fish tacos are highly recommended.

Overall, the atmosphere is very relaxed. Because the bar is relatively small, it's easy to strike up conversations with other guests, which adds to the friendly, laid-back feel that makes Round Hill so special.

The Cocktail Bar is the heart of the resort in the evenings. With its timeless elegance, live music, and classic cocktails, it's the perfect place to unwind after dinner and soak in the relaxed Caribbean atmosphere. I especially loved the historic photographs lining the walls, highlighting Round Hill’s history. The bar typically winds down around 11:00 p.m., so this isn't a late-night party destination. Instead, it's the perfect setting for a relaxed evening with great music, excellent cocktails, and good conversation before calling it a night.

Something else I want to mention that is harder to put in a category: the people at Round Hill. I asked the sales manager what keeps guests coming back year after year, and the answer without any hesitation was the staff. Jamaica is known for its hospitality but the level at Round Hill is genuinely next level. They know everyone's names, remember preferences and allergies, joke around with the kids, and treat every guest with a warmth that feels completely personal rather than trained. That is ultimately what makes this place special.

GETTING THERE

Round Hill is about 30 minutes from Montego Bay airport. I would strongly recommend the Mobay Club meet and greet service.They meet you right outside the aircraft and guide you through the airport quickly and efficiently. With young kids and luggage it made an enormous difference to the arrival experience and I would not skip it on future trips.

This resort is perfect for

Families wanting a genuinely relaxing vacation where the kids are happy and the adults actually decompress. Couples looking for understated luxury and exceptional service. Multigenerational groups who want villa living with private staff.

Four to Five days I feel would be an ideal length, enough time to fully settle in, find your rhythm, and feel like you have actually experienced the place rather than just passed through it. A full week works beautifully too if you want to slow down even further.

NOT THE RIGHT FIT FOR

Guests who want constant entertainment, waterslides, multiple restaurants, and non-stop scheduled activities. If a big resort with a theme park energy is what you are looking for, you would not be happy here, this is just a very different kind of place.
